I did NOT like these two.

When I draw something I am disappointed in it reminds me of a pivotal moment in my art world: I went to see an exhibition at The Denver Art Museum on Degas and his sketchbooks were included digitally so you could “flip” through them. Of course I am seeing some of his greatest work and wondering if making striking art is a born trait, because, well, I struggle sometimes. I step up to flip through his sketchbooks and am blown away by his ability to capture movement with simple graphite sketches. And then *gasp* I stumbled upon some truly terrible drawings! I swear my whole world changed in that moment: he is an artist, just like the rest of us, he studied endlessly, worked hard, had privilege of his sort, and sometimes drew truly terrible stuff.
At that moment, I learned it is just the way the work goes: if you don’t allow the shitty work and sketches to come out, you won’t discover the the solutions to your creative hangups.
I think we should all share the work that makes us cringe. Sometimes the viewer may agree how weak they are, but sometimes others might see your work without the bias. Loose the ego, expectations, and self policing and just make shit. Share it, throw it out, tuck it away to appreciate later, allow yourself to witness your own growth. Whatever you do, just keep making. I believe all artists who dedicate their life to a craft are in like company whether they be masters or someone like me in my living room studio.
This fall out was an alright one. I’ve been dreaming of developing my own cartoon style and have failed…because I never try 😉

How have you been disappointed in yourself lately? HAHA. JK. I hope you know whatever you do in service to what delights you, you’re doing great. What are you making/reading/writing/dancing to/ listening to/ seeing lately?
