made art with dan again

My art buddy, Dan, and I haven’t been able to get together to make art for the last 6 months. Bummerville. But we finally made it happen! This time around we worked on our own creative endeavors and plan to make collaborative art soon.

Dan had a cool Japanese Ink set that he pulled out for me to play with. The set comes with a grinding stone and five compressed ink sticks.

To bring the ink out, you pool a small amount of water on the stone and then methodically and gently grind the stick to create a mud like consistency (takes about 10 minutes of grinding). The sticks are vibrant colors and I found that after you grind them for awhile the stick softened so I could mark with it and transfer the color. However, the ink pool it made was nothing like the stick color! I gathered we were doing something wrong. Either way, they were interesting materials to play with.

I made meditative ink on ink drawings with the swatch from the stick on the side:

To finish I made a small triptych:

I was inspired to do squirrel-y drawing because of what Dan was working on. It was fun and I am happy with how these turned out. Can’t wait to see what out next art date holds.

  1. These are amazing! It makes sense to me that the ink ends up different than the stick (oxidation), does that mean something’s done wrong, or is that intentional? Meditative ink sounds dreamy, and the resulting work is borderline figurative without being figurative! I love these!
